Sumatra follows the hapless trials and travails of a downbeat nightclub singer named Frank Sumatra, as he is unwittingly drawn further and further into a dark web of intrigue, violence and coconut daiquiris.
After one of Sumatra’s nightly performances, he has a fateful meeting with a bartender named Peaches – and soon tumbles into a sinister murder mystery set around the dusky poolside bars of the Top End.
Troppo Noir, the film's genre, was born of a muggy wet season trip to Darwin's Shoal Bay tip shop, where the writers stumbled across a rare find of 500 old matchbooks featuring images of the sleazy side of 1980s Darwin's nightlife
